Enico to Deliver Energy Storage System to Killin Voima – the Largest of Its Kind Connected to a Hydropower Plant in Finland

Killin Voima Oy, a subsidiary of Koillis-Satakunnan Sähkö, has ordered from the Tampere-based Enico Oy a 6 MW / 12 MWh energy storage system, which will be the largest industrial-scale energy storage connected to a hydropower plant in Finland in terms of energy capacity.

The project is a hybrid system combining hydropower and energy storage. The hydropower plant and storage solution will operate together, enabling participation in flexibility markets maintained by the transmission system operator Fingrid.

“This is an important milestone for Enico in the field of hybrid solutions. All renewable energy generation – whether hydropower, wind, or solar – increasingly requires flexibility mechanisms like energy storage to support and enable participation in flexibility markets. We are seeing growing demand at the customer interface, but there are few providers available. This is a key pilot project for Enico, demonstrating that our customers can rely on local expertise. As a truly Finnish operator using European technology, we can guarantee strong availability and cybersecurity,” says Marko Lähteenmäki, CEO of Enico.

“The green transition is changing our operational environment in the energy sector, and with this investment, we are improving the use of renewable energy. At the same time, we can utilize our production assets more comprehensively across different markets,” says Anu Rantala, CEO of Koillis-Satakunnan Sähkö.

“Due to the current geopolitical and security situation, the significance of electricity production and distribution as critical infrastructure has increased. This energy management and storage solution also helps us prepare better for various disturbances. From a security of supply perspective, Enico is a natural choice as a genuinely local partner. Responsibility, locality, and cooperation are core values of Koillis-Satakunnan Sähkö – and they are all clearly reflected in this collaboration,” Rantala concludes.

The project also involves technical consultancy by Aki Leinonen from PGE Oy.
