Role of Battery Energy Storage

By participating in the reserve market, Mäkelä Alu helps balance the electricity grid and promote the use of green energy. The battery storage acts as a flexibility element that supports the grid when weather-dependent energy production fluctuates. In this way, the company takes concrete social responsibility as part of the broader energy transition.

The company’s green transition continues, with the latest project being the construction of a solar power plant on the factory site. The battery storage operation is monitored as a whole, including market revenues and the overall outlook for reserve markets.

Why Enico?

The decision was driven by responsibility and profitability considerations. The factory’s electrical infrastructure and connection were also well suited for battery storage use.

The process differed most from a traditional procurement process in that the purchased equipment was not directly related to aluminium profile manufacturing. There was a lot to learn about reserve markets, battery storage technology, and grid integration. Mäkelä Alu decided early on to source the equipment from a Finnish supplier. Negotiations and contract drafting with Enico proceeded smoothly.

Enico understood well that we were acquiring our first storage system and didn’t yet have all the information ready

The delivery project went well overall. The battery was not connected to the grid exactly on the original schedule, but this was mainly due to delays in a third-party transformer delivery. At the time of contract signing, Enico offered several months faster delivery compared to competitors. From that perspective, a delay of a few weeks was not dramatic. The investment returns have been as expected, with no surprises either way.
